I can’t make you understand. I can’t make anyone understand what is happening inside me. I can’t even explain it to myself.

ODLEY JEAN
as Dominique Pierre in Grand Army (2020 -)
The most unrealistic thing about Grand Army is that Joey’s family completely supported her through all of it and that is really sad to think about.
im only half way through ep 2 of Grand Army but I’ve got thoughts.
Leila’s character is meant to be annoying. We’re meant to see the other character’s perspective against hers and think ’oh my god, why does she think everything’s about her!?’ But we all know someone that reminds us of her. We can see a bit of ourselves in how she thinks. So far, her character is so realistic of how being isolated and treated as different can effect someone and change them. The desperate need for acceptance. The conflict of identity and longing for people with shared experiences. The rejection and bullying making you paranoid that the world hates you. Not accepted by your ethnic community for being ‘too white’, not fully accepted by the white majority for being a minority. The clash between your female identity, ethnic identity and need for approval.
I’m not saying I like her, but I do think her character’s personality and identity are v v important for people to be seeing today
The way Joey went from “party hard!!! free the nipple!!! makeup is empowering!!! let girls fuck as much as they want!!!” liberal feminist to “let’s question the blatant misogyny within religious texts and classic literary works, the glamorization of women’s pain throughout history, the way porn distorts the appearance & reality of the female body and why were automatically taught not to believe women when we speak up for ourselves” radical feminist was very sexy and iconic of her.
